Buffalo Trace Releases Weller Wheated Rarities

Buffalo Trace Distillery takes wheated whiskey to the next level with the releases of the second edition of Weller Millennium and Weller 18 Year Old, the brand’s oldest age statement to date.Following the inaugural Weller Millennium in May 2024, this second edition presents a newly-crafted blend of vintage straight wheated bourbon and wheat whiskeys. Like its predecessor, each component was distilled at Buffalo Trace in 2001, 2003 and 2006 and set aside for the sole purpose of creating this blend in tribute to William Larue Weller.“Weller Millenium was crafted to feature some of the first whiskeys distilled in the new millennium amid a period of transformation at Buffalo Trace Distillery,” said Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director, Buffalo Trace Distillery. “This second edition takes last year’s release a step further, with a new blend that we humbly believe is an improvement over the well-regarded first edition. By carefully selecting and blending barrels dating back to the early 2000’s, we have revisited a chapter in the Distillery’s history that shaped who we are today.”In keeping with the first edition, Weller Millennium #2 is held in a 750ml handcrafted crystal decanter with a custom-made crystal topper hand-etched with W.L. Weller’s original “W” stamp of quality. An illuminated display case envelopes the 99-roof bottling with exactly 99 bursts while displaying the proportions and distillation years of each vintage whiskey. As the oldest age stated whiskey in the Weller portfolio, Weller 18 Year Old is an ultra-aged , 90-proof wheat whiskey. It is packaged in a 700ml handcrafted crystal decanter with a custom-made crystal topper hand-etched with W.L. Weller’s original “W” stamp of quality, similar to Weller Millennium but without the accompanying presentation case.“Weller 18 Year Old is the culmination of curiosity, tradition and time,” said Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller, Buffalo Trace Distillery. “The softness of the wheat has evolved into something rich and wonderfully expressive. We are extremely proud of the resulting whiskey, which showcases the versatility and potential of a wheat-forward mashbill.”Both expressions are said to celebrate the original wheated bourbon recipes pioneered by Weller in 1847. At a time when rye and corn dominated the market, his use of wheat, primarily a food crop, resulted in a smoother, sweeter whiskey.Weller Millenium will be released in limited quantities for $7,500. For its inaugural release, Weller 18 Year Old will be available via Global Travel Retail at airports including Los Angeles International (LAX), John F. Kennedy International (JFK) and London Heathrow (LHR) for $499.

I.W. Harper Celebrates 150 Years With Rare Release

Stitzel-Weller Distillery has introduced its rarest release in I.W. Harper’s 150-year history, I.W. Harper 34-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.Distilled in 1989 and matured for over three decades at the historic Kentucky distillery, the expression was blended from four hand-selected barrels, preserved and bottled at cask strength (126 proof).“I held onto this whiskey knowing exactly how special it was,” said Nicole Austin, Diageo’s Director of American Whiskey Liquid Development and Capabilities. “These barrels were marked for I.W. Harper all those years ago, and I’ve been waiting for the right moment to do something truly meaningful with them. This release is the rarest in the brand’s history—a liquid that’s been carefully stewarded for 34 years. As someone who has spent my career honoring the past while helping shape what American whiskey can be, this project has been incredibly personal. It’s a way to spotlight I.W. Harper’s legacy through a lens of true rarity and reverence.”Crafted from just four legacy barrels laid down in 1989, this expression was launched in collaboration with Colman Domingo, two-time Oscar nominated actor, director and philanthropist, as a "reflection of enduring style and an intentional celebration of identity, individuality, and artistic expression."Only 5 bottles will be sold (out of only 11 total in existence), exclusively consigned via global auction at Sotheby’s in New York, with proceeds donated to Native Son, a platform created to inspire, empower and amplify the visibility of Black queer men.Founded by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, I.W. Harper has long had a strong connection Black culture in America. According to Flaviar, Bernheim believed Lincoln freed the slaves to allow them to create their own destiny. He also employed many African-Americans. Continuing that mission, proceeds from the auction will benefit Native Son’s mission.“As someone who cares deeply about legacy and representation, this release feels personal,” said Colman Domingo. “As a Black queer man, I know how vital visibility, support, and community are. Choosing Native Son as the charity partner was intentional—it reflects the same values we’re honoring through the whiskey: legacy, cultural expression, and creating space to be seen and celebrated. I.W. Harper 34-Year-Old isn’t just about rarity; it’s about storytelling that honors both past and future.”The bottle was developed through that lens, including the couture-inspired wrist piece to the silk scarf by Brooklyn-based creative Michelle Cadore.“These remarkable bottles take center stage – distilled in 1989, they mark a special moment in American whiskey history,” said Zev Glesta, Spirits Specialist, AVP, at Sotheby’s. “Exceptionally well-aged, bottled at cask strength, and five of only 11 in existence, it’s the kind of release collectors dream about. What makes it even more special is that the proceeds will go directly to Native Son, a cause close to our hearts. We’re proud to be part of something so thoughtfully curated – not just celebrating an incredible whiskey, but also giving back in a meaningful way.”

Frey Ranch Goes To Grains

Frey Ranch Distillery recently announced the launch of its Five Grain Single Barrel Bourbon, the first-ever release from the distillery that features all five of the grains distilled together – corn, wheat, barley, rye, and oat - that Whiskey Farmer Colby Frey grows exclusively on his farm. With his farming acumen, Colby plants and harvest grains that are specifically destined to become whiskey. “Oats are notoriously difficult to distill, but (Master Distiller) Russell Wedlake and I love a challenge," said Frey Ranch Distillery Co-Founder/Whiskey Farmer Colby Frey. "Oat is 60 percent hulls by volume and low on starch, which is problematic for a whiskey maker, as the hulls plug up the stills and the low starch means a lower yield per barrel. For this release, we have less than 350 bottles in total that are available for purchase both online and in the Tasting Room, so these are definitely a get ‘em while they’re hot commodity.”The mash bill for Frey Ranch Five Grain Bourbon features 60% corn, 10% wheat, 10% rye, 10% malted barley and 10% oat. Two barrels were bottled for this initial single barrel release. At 130.24 proof, Barrel #3016 was aged for 6 years, 2 months, and 1½ days. Aged for 6 years, 2 months and 2 ½ days, Barrel #3011 packs a heavyweight punch with a cask strength proof of 133.22. 186 bottles of Barrel #3016 are available for purchase online at Shop.FreyRanch.com. 156 bottles of Barrel #3011 are available for purchase exclusively at the Frey Ranch Tasting Room.Frey Ranch Five Grain Single Barrel Bourbon Barrel #3016 and Frey Ranch Five Grain Single Barrel BourbonBarrel #3011 are available for $89.00 per bottle.

Old Forester Goes Back In Time For New 117 Series

Old Forester remembers its roots via the release of 1910 Extra Extra Old, part of 117 Series. The double-barreled bourbon is aged for an extra 24-months in a heavily charred secondary oak barrel and is 93 proof. 1910 Extra Extra Old debuted in Spring 2021 as a result of an experiment of aging 1910 Old Fine Whisky for an extended finishing period which impacted the expression’s tasting profile.“This bourbon exemplifies our innovative spirit at Old Forester by taking something great and making it even better,"said Old Forester Assistant Master Distiller Caleb Trigo. "The additional maturation leveraged to produce this release unlocks incredibly robust and distinctive flavor."Old Forester 1910 commemorates the October 22, 1910 distillery fire at 117 Main Street. Bib & Tucker has brewed up something special with its latest release, Gold Roast Bourbon, a 6-year Tennessee bourbo finished with whole roasted Arabica coffee beans.Crafted using coffee beans from Muletown Coffee Roasters, a Tennessee-based purveyor of fine coffee, the expression begins with Bib & Tucker's  6-year bourbon. Aged in new American oak barrels and passed through the Lincoln County Process, it is infused in its final stage with cold-steeped, custom-roasted Arabica coffee beans sourced from the Agalta region of Honduras."With Gold Roast Bourbon, we set out to honor the timeless relationship between coffee and bourbon, two American rituals that have gone hand in hand since the turn of the century," said Alan Kennedy, Master Blender at Bib & Tucker. Two Stacks Bets On Single Grain

Two Stacks makes its first offering in the Irish Grain Whiskey category with its Single Grain Double Barrel.Through importer Foley Family Wines & Spirits, Two Stacks is always on the hunt for traditional Irish whiskeys that they can make their own. Two Stacks Single Grain Double Barrel showcases the versatility and refinement of Irish Grain Whiskey, a traditional style of whiskey most often used as a blending component. The expression starts with a mashbill of 94% maize and 6% Irish malted barley. The technical file for Irish Grain Whiskey requires that it is produced with malted barley (not exceeding 30%) and includes un-malted cereal grains, in this case corn. The distillate is first aged for 3-5 years in former bourbon barrels, followed by 1-3 years in Oloroso sherry casks, both in a traditional Irish rickhouse on the Cooley Peninsula.“I think a lot of folks in Ireland thought we were mad when we told them we were coming out with an Irish Grain Whiskey,” said Two Stacks Co-Founder Liam Brogan. “We were confident with the right blend and aging/finishing we could produce something rather sophisticated and unexpected that honored the legacy of this workhorse stalwart in Irish whiskey history.”While not as historically entrenched as the famed Single Pot Still whiskeys of the 18th and 19th centuries, the single grain style gained momentum with the advent of column stills in the mid-1800s. However, it wasn’t until the establishment of Cooley Distillery in 1987 and The Great Northern Distillery in 2015 (both founded by John Teeling, David Hynes, and Jim Finn) that the style came into its own in modern Ireland. The whiskey from those distilleries is blended and bonded for this bottling. Two Stacks Single Grain Double Barrel is available in both a 100 ml Dram in a Can and a 700 ml sustainable bottle made from 100% recycled glass for $6.99 and $44.99, respectively.

Buffalo Trace Introduces Taylor's Distiller’s Council

Buffalo Trace Distillery introduces Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council. Crafted using equipment and based on techniques originally invented by Taylor, this 100-proof bottling stands as the closest modern interpretation of the bourbons produced under his leadership at O.F.C Distillery (now Buffalo Trace) during the 19th century. The inspiration for this modern recreation traces back to 1996, when a group of bourbon experts and retired George T. Stagg Distillery distillers convened at Buffalo Trace in their pursuit to create the world’s best whiskey. As they sampled more than 30 whiskeys across a range of ages, mash bills and proofs, one voice cut through the room with a thought: “Well, we don’t make whiskey the way we used to.” This led to the Distiller's Council unpacking the way that whiskey was made when they first started their careers. That meeting, until now known by bourbon insiders as the “Distiller’s Council”, resulted in a re-discovery of E.H. Taylor’s pioneering techniques. This led to the revival of Taylor’s sour mashing process – patent pending by Buffalo Trace – and, combined with the modern methods of Buffalo Trace’s distillation team. The production process remains nearly identical to that of the 1880s using both grains in his mashbill and his fermentation process.“Colonel Taylor’s unwavering commitment to quality and innovation has helped shape every decision at our Distillery since he set our standards in 1870,” said Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller, Buffalo Trace Distillery. “His enduring legacy left a profound impact on everyone present on that fateful day in 1996. As many of them are no longer with us, we hope they are enjoying this angel’s share with the Colonel himself – watching proudly as we carry his vision forward.”Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. purchased the O.F.C. Distillery in 1869 and ushered in a new era of innovation. From state-of-the-art grain equipment to copper fermentation tanks and the first steam-heated barrel warehouses – still in use at Buffalo Trace today – Taylor’s vision revolutionized bourbon production. His advocacy also led to the landmark Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, cementing his legacy as a champion of quality and integrity. His visionary spirit continues to guide Buffalo Trace more than a century later.“Colonel E.H. Taylor didn’t just shape a distillery – he helped shape the entire bourbon industry. That’s why he’s known as the Father of Modern Bourbon,” said Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “From championing the Bottled-in-Bond Act to modernizing production standards, many of his innovations have stood the test of time and are in use to this day. Always of Topmost Class, he set the bar for integrity, innovation and craftsmanship. In that spirit, we are proud to revive this faithful interpretation of his original recipe, crafted with the same standards of quality and spirit of innovation he so fiercely advocated.”Bottled in a vintage-style, Grecian glass decanter modeled after one featured in an 1950s-era Old Taylor “Original Recipe” Bourbon advertisement, this special bottling is the 14th release to join the portfolio alongside expressions including Small Batch, Single Barrel, Rye, Barrel Proof Rye, Warehouse C Tornado Surviving Bourbon and Four Grain, among others.Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council is available in limited quantities for $1,499.99.
